Final Fight: DI Review

Capcom has remade and re-mastered a few games as of late, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 being one of the more recent, as well as Bionic Commando: Rearmed. Both were great games in their own right. So the question is how does Double Impact stand up to that standard set by its predecessors. Does it warrant a purchase other than that of the hardcore fan?

First off, let’s go on the record and say that Final Fight is the main draw of this game. After all most people who buy it wont realize that it even has Magic Sword until they start the game up, not to mention the fact it is the primary name they decided to go with for the title. Personally I would have called it, ‘Magic Sword & Final Fight: The Double Impact’ but again, that’s me. Nonetheless, the game is great fun for fans of both games. The added challenges in the way of ‘Vault Challenges’ will keep old school die hard gamers happy.

The games themselves remain unchanged but many like it that way. Although many gamers prefer the re-vamped HD games such as the great ‘Turtles In Time Re-Shelled’. Instead the developers chose to go old school and leave the game mostly untouched. The options and the added ability to play it in ‘Cabinet Mode’ let games have a diverse selection of resolutions and quality. Wither you find the cabinet mode cool or you prefer the old school look, or widescreen or even like to see the subtle nuances of smooth and crisp quality texture the options are all there for your choosing.

The only real addition to the gameplay is the ability to play co-op online with your friends and the leaderboard functionality. The game is really fun with two players, especially Final Fight, but the one, and major downside is the mic support for the game is almost atrocious. Hopefully there will be a patch soon to rectify this issue. There is also a 2 player offline co-op as well for the inclined. Just remember to set your game the way you want with the triangle (Y) button so you can either be bothered, or not be bothered by random people looking for someone to play with. Both games can be beaten in about an hour or so depending on the skill level, but sometimes you have to realize when these games were first released there weren’t many games that couldn’t be beaten in one sitting. As they didn’t have an autosave feature like we do now (which this game comes fully equipped with if you so decide you’re not going to sit there to beat the games straight away).

So, in a nutshell the game really comes down to how hardcore of a fan of the included games you are. If you love nostalgic moments you will have (and you will have them) with Final Fight and Magic Sword than this is a must buy for you at the tantalizing price of $10(or 800 MSP if you purchase over XBLA). If you’re a casual gamer who has yet to experience these amazing games, than again for the price this is the best deal on the market. The ‘Vault Challenges’ unlockables will keep the hardcore happy with such rewards as a full episode of the original 90’s Street Fighter cartoon titled ‘Final Fight’ with Cody, Guy and the cast of the game. This is one throwback game you won’t want to miss, if you can overlook the length of the games themselves.

Capcom has a legacy that dates back to the times of quarters and continues. Ghost & Goblins, Capcom vs SNK, and Bionic Commando have all seen their days in an Arcade machine. Of the wide list of games that have seen their arcade days in Capcoms lineup they have chosen to resurrect Final Fight and Magic Sword for next gen consoles via downloadable combo game.

Double Impact really resonates with fans of the series and gaming veterans. It will have gamers coming to check it out and see what’s new. There’s ‘The Vault’ which houses all your accomplishments throughout both games, it’s fun to do for all those completionists and unlocks some cool stuff too. The game is re-mastered version of both games, Final Fight and Magic Sword. It is originally presented in an arcade machine format with the game screen taking up the middle section of your television. It adds a great retro feel to the whole thing which I think is exactly what they were going for.

The next gen transfer brings a lot of great features to the table. Online Co-Op is a much welcomed edition where you can drop in and drop out and even set your status to invite only, friends or open just like in Street Fighter IV, and even be anti-social with a No Online option. However if you choose this your stats wont be tracked on the leaderboards. It also features offline co-op for those who want to make use of it.

So if you’re a fan of Final Fight or Magic Sword of you just love retro classics keep an eye out for Final Fight: Double Impact coming out April 15th on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN for $10 or 800MS points. Keep it here for our review of the game and all the coverage you need of Haggard, Guy and Cody, and the Warrior guy from Magic Sword (Does he have a name?).

Final Fight Double Impact

Final Fight: Double Impact is a dual release of two classic arcade side-scrolling beat-em-ups. First up is Final Fight, where players follow the heart-pounding adventures of Cody, Guy, and Haggar – three heroes fighting their way across crime-ridden Metro City in hopes of saving Haggar’s daughter from the evil clutches of Mad Gear. There are 6 stages filled with perilous challenges where the only hope for justice is the unique fighting techniques mastered by each character. With the news released today that Cody and Guy will both be playable characters in Super Street Fighter® IV, Capcom fans now have the chance to take a trip down memory lane and experience these characters in their first appearance before playing them in the new Street Fighter®game.

In Magic Sword, users will take on the role of the “The Brave One,” a fierce warrior who bears the daunting responsibility of cleansing evil forces from an ancient tower. As a consequence of his actions, he will inevitably meet the source of this scourge upon humanity – the dark lord Drokmar. But fear not as the hero is accompanied by eight allies who will lend their assistance through out the game. All of them bring specific skills and talents to contribute to the fight. It’s an amazing side-scrolling action illustrated in classic fantasy stylings, making a perfect pairing with Final Fight.

• Players can play alone or with a partner with online support.

New optional visual filter smoothes out the game’s graphics.

Unlock a plethora of extras from original game art to full motion video!

Available for the first time via digital distribution on Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

Original soundtrack remixed by the composers responsible for the Bionic Commando: Rearmed soundtrack!
Track and compare your scores to compete for bragging rights with the leader boards for Final Fight and Magic Sword.

The game looks to be a great arcade game for fans of the ‘old school’ era of gaming. Final Fight holds a place in most gamers hearts so I don’t see why people won’t pick it up. Stay tuned for more coverage on the games as they get closer to release. Till then check out the screens and discuss on the forums.

My thoughts on what Capcom and Microsoft have up their sleeves.

You all know by now that Capcom & Microsoft have partnered to reveal something on the 26th. All signs it pointing to a new game. These are my predictions on what it could be in no particular order. (Please Note The Following Are Predictions And Are No Way To Be Considered Confirmed)

10) Partnership: Yea its not a new game but it’s still possible that all they are announcing is a partnership. Highly doubtful, but usually a BIG BIG game they will hype up a little more than 5 days.

9) XBL Game: Maybe its an exclusive Xbox Live title? I mean those Street Fighter Games preformed pretty well on XBL and a remade edition of Street Fighter 3 or Street Fighter Alpha 2 would make fans happy.

8.) Final Fight Remake: I would have to give hats off to MS if they make a Final Fight remake. With lets say the Resident Evil 5 graphics engine, alright maybe thats wishing but more likely the SFIV graphics engine would still be sweet.

7.) 360 Version Of Viewtiful Joe or Okami: This would make every fanboy erupt and possible explode, meanwhile making every Nintendo fan cry. It’s not completely likely yet not completely out of the question.

6) Devil May Cry 5: To me this is the most likely on the list. It preformed better on the 360 and it would anger a lot of Sony enthusiasts if Microsoft bought the rights to DMC5 and it seems all the more likely I think about it.

5) Maximo: The return of the underwear knight! Its possible and it would be geared to the hardcore and the casual, it could very well be a great game! Seriously….

4) Natal IP: What better way to announce a partnership than to smack a Natal game on there? People would love it and it would be the first full fledged Natal game.

3) Power Stone: Every Dreamcast fan would have a field day, and they would make a lot of money if it was a full fledged remake. Seriously I have all the ideas.

2) Capcom VS SNK: A remake with SFIV graphics would blow the socks off any fighting game currently out and im hoping guess is the right one. That would be amazing. Think about it people.

1) Mega Man Next: Maybe it’s an all new Mega Man title to capitalize on Mega Man 10′s release hype? Possible but unlikely. Would be amazing to see though.

Will any of these happen? Maybe. I’d put my money on the SNK and DMC5 but thats me. Give us your ideas in the forums and in the comments below. Peace.
