That is if you own an Xbox as Microsoft have launched the Mass Effect 3 Facebook application to reward users with avatar props and prizes.

The app lets you take part in “missions” which upon completion unlock Xbox 360 rewards and an entry into a sweepstake. The sweepstake prizes include a custom 250GB Xbox 360 themed in either Mass Effect 3′s Paragon or Renegade finish.

There will be no in-game bonuses from taking part in the app as EA are providing that themselves with their “handheld/mobile” tie-in.

The first mission is now available and to take part all you have to do is sign up. When enough people have signed up you’ll nab yourself a Normandy prop for your avatar. The second mission will arrive next week and will give players a chance to get early access to the Mass Effect 3 demo. To take part you have to submit your best pick up line, or indeed your best put-down if you want to be a renegade.

There are a total of 11 missions planned across the coming weeks until the games March 9th release.

It seems that EA’s demo for Mass Effect 3 will include access to Xbox Live Gold so all players can have a crack at the games online multiplayer.

Microsoft have said that they will provide a limited time Gold subscription with the download of the demo.

No details as to how this will work were given out, but it is presumed that a code will be included with the demo that allows for a short period of Gold account status on the system.

The demo will be available on Xbox live, Playstation Network and PC from the 14th of February, and will include a single-player mission from the start of the games campaign.

If you purchased Battlefield 3, and have an online pass, you can get access to the demo’s multiplayer straight away, whilst everybody else has to hold out until the 17th to enjoy its delights.

Mass Effect 3 arrives on March 9th

Today EA posted its Q3 revenues, and they were rather good. Raking in $1.65 billion in revenue, compared to the $1.55 billion they had projected for themselves. Their losses were also an improvement, $205 million compared to the $322 million year-over-year.

EA also announced that they had sold a mighty 2 million units of Star Wars: The Old Republic, and that BioWare’s MMO has 1.7 million daily active subscribers.

Going hand in hand with these strong results was the announcement that EA’s distribution service Origin had 9.3 million registered users, and has generated more than $100 million in revenue since it’s launch.

“We are pleased to report a strong holiday quarter driven by Battlefield 3, FIFA12 and a strong showing by our digital games and services,” said EA CEO John Riccitiello. “Star Wars: The Old Republic is developing a committed community of players with more than 1.7 million active subscribers and growing.”

All in all, sounds like a pretty damn good third quarter for the company.

Upcoming Starbreeze Studio’s reboot of Electronic Arts game Syndicate won’t contain the controversial online pass that so many other EA games do.

Speaking to Eurogamer, EA Partner executive producer Jeff Gamon said that this decision was made in an ‘effort to encourage all players to play the shooter’. “We want as little resistance or barriers to entry as possible,” Gamon said. “The co-op is equal billing in this. We wanted everyone who owns a copy of the game to have access to the entire product.”

EA’s policy of including an Online Pass in all its games apparently does not apply to EA Partners games. Looking back at EA Partners published games, Portal 2 and Crysis 2, none have contained Online Pass’, however Gammon said that there are differences between those titles and the upcoming Syndicate.

Unlike previous EA Partners games, EA Partners actually managed the development of the game, and the IP belongs to EA, despite Starbreeze being an independent developer. “Under normal circumstances it would have had an online pass, but because it didn’t have competitive multiplayer and because we wanted as many people as possible to be playing co-op, we got away with it,” Gamon explained.

“Maybe another reason for not having the Online Pass is we were confident in the scope of the online game. “There are nine maps. It’s hard to say, but just to play through the maps once on normal is a good six, seven hours. To progress your character and upgrade a few weapons is a heap of content. That and the single-player campaign means hopefully we won’t see much in the way of early second hand sales and rentals.”

When put like that it makes sense that the title doesn’t have the Online Pass system, however it also raises the question of why do they ever really feel a need to have it in the first place. It seems just as likely that someone will trade it in once the game is finished as they’ll want to put the money towards another product at a later date.

Still it’s nice to know that not every title from here till the end of time will feature an Online Pass.

Largely confirming the return of many same cast members, such as Martin Sheen as Illusive Man, Seth Green as Joker, Ali Hillis as Liara and Jennifer Hale as ‘FemShep. It also brings to light that Freddie Prinze Jr will take up the role of James Vega and confirms that IGN host Jessica Chobot will voice Diana Allers.

Crazy stuff.

Yesterday the EA forum homepage was “defaced by a hacker” admitted the publisher this morning, although I’m sure you all must have noticed.

EA have fixed the issue, and are sure that no personal data had been stolen.

Dan Sheridan addressed the community to give some assurance to users.

“As some of you noticed, the homepage of the forums was defaced by a hacker yesterday using a very new exploit for the software which runs the forums. This was noticed quickly and we took the action to take the forums offline while we investigated the details.

“This work is now complete, and the vulnerability we believe was used has now been fixed.

“There is no evidence that any personal data was compromised, and as passwords aren’t stored in a recoverable manor, we are confident they remain secure.

“Thank you for your patience whilst the forums were offline and we took the necessary steps to investigate this.”
