reaAha, this article was prompted by a comment made on one of my previous articles by my good TGH friend JayTaylor.

Jay, thanks man.

In case you are interested, the article was –

http://thegamershub.co.uk/2011/02/debate-week-should-alan-wake-return-from-the-darkness/

And the comment is -

I feel the same, Alan Wake was an amazing game that truly deserves a sequel, especially in these times of generic shooter after generic shooter, it’s refreshing to play a cinematic, story-driven game that actually makes you care about the characters.

I also primarily play on the PS3, but I bought a 360 to play the exclusives such as Alan Wake and Gears of War, so I for one would have definitely bought Alan Wake if was available on PS3.

Here’s hoping that Remedy get the go-ahead for a sequel, and that great single-player games such as this don’t die out in favour of multiplayer shooters…it would be a terrible loss for the industry and gamers alike.

You know what? I totally agree.

So PPL, here lies our subject.

The age old debate about Single Player gaming and Multiplayer gaming. What do you prefer?

I primarily prefer Single player campaigns, then local co-op or vs game modes (tekken/fifa), with Online multiplayer as a final option. But that’s just my personal choice.

I used to fear the possibility of developers adding more online multiplayer options to their games and offering shorter or even lackluster single player campaign’s. But fortunately for many gamers, it’s looking quite promising.

Here are some of the stellar titles released in the past year which concentrate on the single player aspect of top notch gaming. All of these classic titles offer cool characters, slick graphics, tight controls, roller coaster storylines and emotional linkage.

God of War 3

Enslaved – 1x dlc level available

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – 2x dlc levels coming soon

Vanquish – with challenge rooms and leader boards included

Alan Wake – 2x dlc available

Heavy Rain – 1x dlc available

I mean, who can forget Alan Wake’s undying love for his wife being the catalyst for his struggle against the darkness.

Ethan’s selfless dive to save his son at the start of Heavy Rain, leading to the most emotional starting credits I have seen in a game for many many years (MGS4 on PS3 and DMC3 of PS2 are among the best for me)

And for the record, everything about Vanquish, is just plain awesome.

On the flip side, it is possible to have the best of both worlds in one title.

Assassins Creed: Brotherhood had a great single player adventure with loads of side missions and collectables which all made sense to complete. With the exception of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, AC Brotherhood also has the most refreshing online multiplayer offering for quite a while.

Dead Space 2 offers a decent online multiplayer offering, with the chance to be both necromorph and human. Do I need to say anything about the single player campaign? Just play it.

That’s all I have at the moment. Now, it’s your turn.

Do you enjoy the freedom of playing online for kill streaks, perks, teamwork, social game chatting, and getting top ranks on leader boards all over the world?

Or do you enjoy the emotional roller coaster offerings of movie like plots, deep characters and feeling of accomplishment when you see the end credits roll after an enigmatic climax.

Do you know some gamers buy Halo, Killzone and Call of Duty titles to strictly to play online and never touch their single player campaigns. These 6/7 hour campaigns are full of mind blowing action and hot set pieces to burn our senses.

Do you do that?

Does that make you wrong?

I have played many FPS titles for their story and experience, and only briefly entered the multiplayer sections.

I can’t begin to describe how excited I am to get my hands on the Killzone 3 and Crysis 2 single player campaign’s. Dont get me wrong, as both games have stellar multiplayer modes too. In fact, I will deffinitely be giving them a try out. But I can’t help the way I feel for their story based modes.

Does this make me a bad gamer?

Am I wrong to feel this way?

After all, I am JustaGamer…………………. Just like you.

Just yesterday, a unpolished build of Crysis 2 was leaked onto torrent sites, EA had this to say:

“Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites. Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22. Crysis 2 is still in development and promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the series’ signature Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion. Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community”

though it’s unlikely this will really hurt sales, as a large portion will likely be for the multiplayer aspect which the leaked version does not include.

Today Bioware’s parent company, EA, announced that along with the new Dragon Age: Origins Expansion, Dragon Age: Awakening, that they also plan to release a whole new Dragon Age game. Rarely any details were given along with the except that we can expect it to come out Q4. Along with the Dragon age announcement came other such as Crysis 2, due in Q2, and Skate 3, due in Q1.

There would also be 3 new Need for Speed titles that should be released this year also. The First new title Need for Speed World will come out in Q1, and the other two will come out in Q3 and Q4. The most interesting part about this is that Burnout developer Criterion Games is confirmed to be working on one Need for Speed title.

Along with all this far good news there is always something that will come along and ruin it. Ea announced a mysterious game that was simply dubbed ,”Action Title,” to be come out in Q4. Hopefully its not a sequel to a God of War rip-off, also known as Dantes Inferno 2.
