Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Episode 2 “The Tomb of Sammun-Mak”

Sam & Max adventure continues in episode 2 “The Tomb of Sammun-Mak.” Do Sam & Max continue to have great and challenging puzzles, smart and funny dialogue, and an adventure that will keep you waiting for their next episode? Well, find out in this review of Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Episode 2 “The Tomb of Sammun-Mak.”

Story and Gamplay

In the episode 1 of Sam & Max, the evil space ape Skunkape is defeated, the devil’s toy box is at hand, and you think that was the end of the adventure for Sam & Max till then the narrator told you there was another episode. The mystery of the devil’s toy box is still at hand but, why is it under Sam & Max’s HQ. In this episode of Sam & Max, you do not control Sam & Max but, control their great grandfathers Sameth & Maximus. Sameth & Maximus are the ones who found the devil’s toy box and the ones that are skeletons in the basement below Sam & Max’s HQ. The story is very much fresh and unique since the last episode.

This time around the story is divided into four reels that tell the tale of Sameth & Maximus and the quest for the devil’s toy box. What is unique about this episode is the story and how it is told from each film. During any point of the episode you can jump to a different film but, that will not ruin the story at all but, is more or less a giant puzzle. You will have to go back and forth between reels to find clues to help in earlier reels and more. In this episode of Sam & Max new characters show up in each reel. They all have their own problems, and dialogue. New characters include Nickolas St. Kringle, the elves, a German named Juren, four protectors of the devil’s toy box, and baby Amelia Airhart.

Maximus does have psychic powers but, sadly is not used as much in this episode. There are two new toys that Maximus gets and both are a Can of Nuts which hops both Sameth & Maximus in the Can of Nuts. The other toy is a ventriloquist dummy (Charlie hotap) which Maximus uses his voice and makes people say things. Overall, the story is a fresh idea and very unique in terms of it being a giant puzzle. The jokes and dialogue are funny and will have both adult and kid oriented jokes. The only problems that still plague Sam & Max are the cameras angle, and bugs within the game.

Closing Note

Sam & Max continues to be adventure that makes me want more of Sam & Max and how will this story tie in with the rest. This episode just raises the bar for this tale of Sam & Max and I do hope that TellTale Games can out do this episode and make the adventure even more enjoyable and entertaining.
