The Wonderful World of the Synonym [Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier]

Ladies and gentlemen of The Gamer’s Hub. Let us not stand and fight on the blood-soaked battlefields of Tom Clancy’s parallel universe. Let us not look upon this as an exciting development in the future of gaming. Let us not examine the potential technologies and real-world projects that this game throws in our faces and most of all, let us remember and pay homage the wonderful English language which this game owes so much to.

That’s more like it: Ghost Recon : Future Soldier.

The hilarious amongst you may know that representatives of Ubisoft filed a trademark for “Future Soldier”. This is of course a massive departure from their previous Ghost Recon title, “Advanced Warfighter”. In fact, the names are so many poles apart that I feel the need to include more a more detailed analysis of the sheer and massive differences between the two names.

So I will, here’s those names defined according to Dictionary.com.

Advanced – (adj.) - Ahead or far or further along in progress, complexity, knowledge, skill, etc.: an advanced class in Spanish; to take a course in advanced mathematics; Our plans are too advanced to make the change now.

Future – (adj.) - That is to be or come hereafter.

Soldier – (noun.)A person who serves in an army; a person engaged in military service.

Warfighter (noun.) - Clearly a made up term to describe a soldier.

So what we’re learning here is the power of the synonym.

Synonym (noun.) – A word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another in the language, as joyful, elated, glad.

Because what Ubisoft have cleverly done, by trying to take the name of the project currently being undertaken by the US Army is give their latest installment in the Ghost Recon series exactly the same name as the previous two incarnations of their popular shooter. In a world dominated by games that are set very much in the graspable future, will Ghost Recon be able to compete with the likes of Modern Warfare 2 and the upcoming Bad Company 2? Or is a company who is obsessed with pumping out endless sequels of games which have already outstayed their welcome on the market about to take it one step too far with its tactical shooter flagship? I worry that a company so seemingly ill-versed in the complexities of English might struggle.

The teaser trailer, now available on the website shows a cloaking technology which is very intriguing and seems to be the main selling-point of the game at the moment, but will technology be enough to crack the (anticipated) dominance of Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare 2? Despite the Advanced Warfighter games being more based on tactics and precision, the need for non-stop excitement is something that Ubisoft may need to address to redress this balance.

An excitement-filled press release from Ubisoft read:

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will apparently go beyond the core Ghost Recon franchise and deliver a fresh gameplay experience, with an unparalleled level of quality that will excite long-time fans and newcomers alike”.

I’m quite sure that this information had you all wetting your pants with the promise of a game which would blow Call of Duty and Battlefield out of the water but the previous incarnations of this game have given me no reason to get excited about this latest attempt and the fact that Ubisoft are promising a free Beta key to anyone who buys the latest installment of the done-to-death Splinter Cell series. If you’re excited enough about GR:FS to help Ubisoft continue to flog a dead Fisher then fair play to you, but this is one writer who will remain skeptical until to the very last second.

And the award for most sarcastic, ill-informed game preview goes to…
