Pixel*Junk Interview
The PixelJunk series is made by an amazing group of developers at Q-Games. We got a chance to talk with them and ask them a few questions regarding, their ideas and how they came up with such innovative games such as PixelJunk Eden.
TheGamersHub(Anthony):Tell us a little about your company and the games you make.
Q-Games(Dylan):We thrive on innovation, technology and fun, and hopefully our games reflect that. We never want to make a game that has the same basic dynamics as a game that already exists. We always try to twist genres a little bit so they aren’t quite what you expect them to be.
The PixelJunk series that you guys make is one of my favorites. Any plans on the next in the series?
Plenty of plans, nothing concrete to announce yet of course. We are very secretive about what we make.

The PixelJunk series has become a staple of the Playstation 3, is there a particular reason you guys went with the Playstation for that series?
Well, I did work at Sony for many years, I do feel a certain affinity towards them. Even before I worked there Sony’s image was always very innovative. I remember their first memory-buffered CD players (EMS), and I think I even bought one, if you remember back in the eighties CDs used to skip if you stepped a little too hard as you walked. Lots of little innovations like that always kept me a fan. The PS3 has so many cool features such as being a DLNA server etc., people really should explore everything the PS3 can do for them.

I consider PixelJunk Eden to be very revolutionary as far as gameplay and concept. What gave you guys the inspiration for PixelJunk Eden?
Yes, we think it’s very revolutionary too – it gives players a completely different experience to what they’ve had up until now. Of course, a lot of players are put off by this, but the people who persevere become lifelong PixelJunk fans. It’s raw roots are in a game called Bugaboo the Flea which was released on the ZX Spectrum in the mid-eighties. Of course, it is completely different if you compare them directly, well, apart from the jumping and falling bit. I seem to remember Bugaboo the Flea was made by a Spanish games studio.

The graphics were quite striking back in the day, which is also a similar trait to Eden.
Are there any plans to go multi-platform and go onto XBLA with the PixelJunk Series?
Nope.
Trajectile looks like an amazing concept. Any plans to port it over to the consoles?
I can’t comment on Nintendo games unfortunately, they are the worldwide publishers.(Ed. Note: That Means No.)
What are you guys at Q Games currently working on?
Secret stuff that is very very cool and innovative.
You guys got any plans to bring more of your PixelJunk series to the PSP system like you did with PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe?
No plans at the moment. PJMD was always intended as a one-off.

Could you send me a code to every game you guys ever made?!
We don’t have any unfortunately! If I had them I’d send them.
Thank you very much for your time. Anything you would like to say to all those PixelJunk fans out there?
Keep looking for innovation!!
There you have it, PixelJunk Eden was brought to fruition from the developers playtime with a Spanish game called The Flea. Who would have thought?
