Obscure: The Aftermath Interview

The Survival horror genre is cramped up with games like Silent Hill, Resident Evil and the upcoming Alan Wake. There is one more to add to that list of amazing and upcoming games, Obscure: The Aftermath which is available now. Developed by Hydravision and published by Playlogic the game looks to redefine the genre for PSP and its other counterparts. So check out the interview with Producer Poria Torkan.

TheGamersHub(Anthony DeCicco): Tell me what’s your name and what you do at Hydravision?

My name is Poria Torkan,  producer for Hydravision on Playlogic’s Obscure: The Aftermath

Tell us about Obscure: The Aftermath?

Well where should I start. Obscure: The Aftermath is a survival horror game with a emphasis on co-op play. If you play the game alone, the second character will be controlled by a NPC. It is the sequel Obscure where a group of young teenagers were trapped inside Leafmore High and hunted by monsters created by the school’s maniac headmaster. The survivors of this dreadful evening have picked up their lives again and moved on to university. Everything is well until strange flowers appear and sniffing them gives the user strange but vivid dreams. A small group of students find there is more to the flowers, because when the seeds finally germinate, a bad trip suddenly turns into a horrible reality. I don’t want to reveal to much about the plot but it is safe to say that something has hit the fan again and the group needs to stick together to survive the horror that is about to consume the entire University.

What inspired you to make a survival horror game in the likes of Silent Hill or Resident Evil?

I think that Obscure: The Aftermath is very different from those titles. Our game was the first Survival Horror to incorporate co-op play (even before RE5) and besides the Survival Horror element from games and movies we were heavily influenced by teen horror movies and there are a number of tongue in cheek over-the-top situations to be found within Obscure: The Aftermath. These can be very cheesy and we had a lot of fun to implement teen horror movie clichés. Because you can play with an array of characters it hugely differs from other Survival Horror games were you play as just the one main character.

What are the eight characters names/skills?

Shannon Mathews is able to control black auras. She can suck them into herself. She is also a veteran of the Leafmore High (Original Obscure game) incident and is therefore best equipped to face the new terror.

Kenny is Shannon’s brother and is the strongest member of the group. He can push heavy obstacles to solve puzzles or to create climbing platforms.

Stan is a pizza courier, who has developed a talent for picking locks

Jun Wang is a female video game enthusiast and she plays them

Mei Wang shares her sister’s love for videogames and she is also good in hacking communication and security devices.

Corey is Mei’s boyfriend. He loves skating and is very athletic.

Sven Hansen was born in Norway but migrated to the US soon after birth. Like Kenny he is very strong and is able to move heavy items.

Amy is blond and the miss wet T-shirt champion, but that doesn’t mean she is without a brain. The group rely on her to break the most difficult codes and puzzles.

Are there multiple endings?

No, but there is surprise for those who watch the credits =)!

Do you plan on making a sequel?

It is certainly possible, but at present I can’t confirm we are working on one

Did you enjoy developing for the PSP and do you plan on moving onto other platforms or consoles?

Obscure the Aftermath (or Obscure 2 as it is named in Europe) has already been released on PlayStation 2, Wii, PC and most recently PSP and PSP Go. The PlayStation Portable version is my favorite as the visuals are much more crisp than the console versions and the specially redesigned control system works very well.

Thank you for your time, anything you would like to add?

I hope players will enjoy Obscure: The Aftermath! You will find it is a very different type of game compared to other games in the survival horror genre.
