Fairytale Fights Interview

Remember when you were a kid and your parents sat you on their lap and told you stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and Jack And The Beanstalk. Well Fairytale Fights is nothing like that. It’s bloodier, a lot bloodier! It’s a fun hack and slash adventure game from the developers over at Playlogic. We were interested in the title so we decided to sit down with Executive Producer Martin Janse at Playlogic to talk about the game and the future of Fairytale Fights.

TheGamersHub(Anthony DeCicco):

Tell me your name and what you do at Playlogic?

My names Martin Janse: Executive Producer for Playlogic’s Fairytale Fights.

Playlogic What gave you guys the idea behind Fairytale Fights?

We had the idea to do something wacky with Fairytale characters. It gradually evolved in the bloody hack and slash platform adventure it is now. Major influences have been classic European fairytales, but also cartoons such as Ren & Stimpy, Happy Tree Friends and Itchy and Scratchy from the Simpsons

How long was the development cycle for the game?

We started 3 years ago with a skeleton crew fleshing out the concept and the team grew over time. Some of the stuff we had to outsource. Most of the game’s animations for instance were done by Sparx Animation (the guys behind MGM’s feature Igor).

Is there one system you felt more comfortable developing for than the other between the two?

No not really. We always hear other developers complain that the PS3 is difficult to develop for but due to our experience with PS3 (The studio has worked on SCEE products such as EyePet, Aqua Vita, Mesmerize and Tori Emaki) we didn’t really had problems with it. And because we already launched Infernal on 360, we knew exactly what was expected of us with Fairytale Fights.

Is it something you guys plan on using in future games?

I think your are referring to the real-time Dynamic Slicing technology. We are very proud on the tech, but we will only use it if it makes sense to the game we are making. So who knows.

I know you recently released DLC for the game, Any Plans for more DLC in the future?

That is always a possibility. We have launched the DLC on PSN for and we are now focusing on Xbox 360. Future DLC is certainly a possibility, although I can’t confirm it at present.

You have any worries that the ESRB wouldn’t approve or that the general public would bad mouth the game given its classic characters hacking and slashing enemies?

Fairytale Fights is very much tongue in cheek and I feel that both the general public and the ESRB understand this. We have been rated M for Mature in the states and 16+ PEGI. I don’t think we are stepping on anybody’s toes. The only worry we had was Germany’s USK who can be notoriously difficult with videogame violence. But luckily they also got the over-the-top humor and we got a rating of 18+.

Are their any plans of a sequel?

Sorry, I can’t tell you yet.

Thank you for your time. Anything you’d like to say to the fans?

We would like to thank everyone who has played Fairytale Fights. We hope that they have as much fun playing it as we had creating the game.
