Blendo Games Interview

Blendo Games is a one man development studio developing the XBL Indie exclusive Flotilla, an ambitious action Real Time Strategy game from Brendon Chung. We also talk about his future works Atom Zombie Smasher and about the possibility to bring the game to the PSN service.

TheGamersHub: Tell us a little about yourself and BlendoGames.

Blendo Games: My name is Brendon Chung. I make games under my Blendo Games title. Right now I’m working on Flotilla, a space strategy/adventure game

Your previous games are available as freeware on your website. Is there any reason you went from freeware to developing for consoles and PC software?

Mainly because I need to put food in my mouth!  I’ve been meaning to take the plunge into indie games development, and Blendo Games is me taking a stab at it.

Tell us about your two upcoming XBL Indie Game titles.

Flotilla is a space strategy/adventure. Combat is done in 3D, so you can flank the enemy from any given direction.  There’s also an adventure component where you explore different planets and find upgrades for your fleet.
I’m also still working on Atom Zombie Smasher, an arcadey strategy game. I’ll be releasing more details about it once Flotilla is all done

Is there anything you can tell us now about Atom Zombie Smasher?

You play as a commander in charge of protecting cities from getting overrun from zombies. There’s also coop, so you and a friend can lay waste to zombie hordes.

Co-op? That’s great to hear. Online or offline co-op and how many players you have planned?

Flotilla and Atom Zombie Smasher both have splitscreen multiplayer. Flotilla supports 2 players, Atom Zombie Smasher supports 4. No Online.

Is there any reason you decided to go with no online support?

I’m a huge fan of multiplayer gaming, which is why I included splitscreen support.  Adding online play is a pretty tremendous task and I chose to not add it to my first title, for scope control and development reasons.

So getting back to Flotilla, what is the structure of the advancement of gameplay?

When the player begins Adventure mode, a new universe is randomly generated – every planet is populated with different events and characters. So, Flotilla doesn’t use a level-based structure.

When can we expect these games to be released?

Right. The next time you visit a planet, you don’t know what’s going to be there.  There might be some friends who give you upgrades, or there might be pirates who try to steal your ships.  The combat scenarios behave similarly; the ship configurations and asteroid fields are also randomly generated.

How long did it take you to come up with such a sophisticated engine?

I’m using the XNA framework to develop Flotilla.  I started working on Flotilla last September, so it’s been about five months.

So do you plan on attempting to release these games on PSN as well, or as part of their Mini’s line of games for PSP/PS3?

PS3 is something I’ll definitely look into for future projects.  Unfortunately, the XNA framework only supports PC and Xbox360.
When can we expect a release on Flotilla and estimation on Atom Zombie Smasher?

Atom Zombie Smasher is too far out to say, but Flotilla is aiming for early March.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?

I wanted to say thanks for all the feedback I’ve gotten for all the different projects I’ve worked on.  It’s all very appreciated, and really is what makes games tick.

Keep an eye out for the game coming sometime in March for the XBL Indie Games service. We would like to thank Brendon Chung for the interview. Comment below about his games and keep an eye on his site for updates and feel free to check out his freeware games!
