Wii Fit?… Get on your Bike!
Wii Fit has been trying to inject some healthy exercise into gaming this generation but, this custom modified exercise bike might be an alternative for anyone who wants to cycle while playing, computer games, I guess…? and no it’s not the bike in the picture, because then it would be in competition for the Wii… for the worst Health & Safety record probably.
An extract from ProjectExciteBikes blog:
The point of the device is to capture the pedaling speed from an exercise bike and make it control a single button on a gamepad, which in turn can be the ‘gas pedal’ for racing games. We have this working with an xbox 360 gamepad but it can be adapted for other controllers and game systems easily. It would be simple to adapt this to a steering wheel controller, for example.
Using the prototype is surprisingly fun, and remarkable in its ability to make you forget just how hard and long you’re working out. It’s tedious to return to working out just to hit a time or distance threshold when you’re used to more direct pedalling imperatives.
I’m all for it, as this winter in Scotland has been lovely and white but not that conducive to cycling unfortunately, so this interested me a lot. It also uses the wireless of the gamepad so there are no wires to worry about and can be made to work with multiple systems.
Maybe not necessarily gaming news, but, interesting none the less, at least to the custom modders out there.
