Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 review
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
First impressions
Normally I’m used to giving the old box some time to warm up before I play it for hours on end due to long loading times. But this, I put the game in, grabbed the TV remote and put it on AV1 and bam there it was. If it was any other game then I would have waited easily twice as long if not longer! So the game impressed me straight away. I then started my campaign and found me watching the opening which tells you what has been happening in MW world between MW1 and MW2, not being the biggest COD fan I just wanted to shoot some Russians and skipped most of it. First impression of the tutorial, well the graphics are fantastic which is to be expected and the controls haven’t changed (as far as I can remember).
Story
SOAP IS BACK! Yes, that’s right, John “Soap” McTavish returns in Modern Warfare 2 as an NPC. Taking the leadership role this time, he is the leader of an international group called Task Force 141. The magazine says that “[Modern Warfare 2] continues the narrative begun in Modern Warfare, with the world facing dangerous political instability in Russia.” A Russian terrorist group that is trying to take the troubled country of Russia’s weapons stockpile. Makarov, the leader of that group, also happens to be an associate of Zakhaev, the man responsible for the first games’ nuclear attack.
One side of the storyline you play in the Rangers, and in the other; Task Force 141. They have done this once again as it gives you the opportunity to experience different environments.
The length of the campaign is not one of the longest I have played, but is longer than COD4 I believe.
Overall I loved the story line, and the end mission and think it is a game worth getting, but do not get this game just for the campaign as it is not the longest and most time consuming game.
Overall
I was going to do a mission by mission review but that would have taken both my time and your reading time. So I shall give you my overall review of the game. I’m going give it a 9/10 because there are no drastic changes which is what should be done on a new game. COD4 was amazing when it came out because no one had thought about making a game like that. COD6 however feels like a very large update to COD4 which is why it didn’t get a 10. Also the online play is still the same as COD4, if I see you, you die and there’s nothing you can do about which is a push and pull factor at the same time. For me it was a push factor as I played online for a week trying to get good at it and all that happened was my death to kill ration got lower and lower. The reason why it feels like one big update is that all they have done really is new maps and the odd new gun. The only things which really caught my eye were the options to have 2 weapons which made it more halo-ish than COD. The heartbeat sensor I found good in campaign but online it’s useless because it doesn’t send a signal out enough you see them once on the sonar before they rape you.
Special ops doesn’t feel like an update it feels like more of an add-on. Part of me feels ripped off at first because there are no drastic changes, there is always room for improvement on perfection and COD6 lacked this. I am not going to reveal the campaign story line all I’m going to say is the campaign stopped me from giving the game below 5 because it was so intense. They literally thought of everything and there wasn’t one part of the campaign I found easy on regular difficulty so if you think you will sail through, you won’t, you will go through 2 controllers and probably a new TV. It’s infuriating because there is more flanking and heavily armoured vehicles in the game than COD4. Overall I understand infinity ward because COD4 was such a hit and they had little feedback because it was faultless. If they had changed some of the really intense game play for some more tactical missions I think then it would have got a 10/10 from me. Other than that a perfect campaign and competitive online game.
Modern Warfare 2 Online
(by Minihook)
Now as you most likely know Modern Warfare was well loved for its online game play and the outstanding graphics it has given us.
Infinity Ward’s sequel from Modern Warfare had high expectations to achieve and by what I have found, they have succeeded.
As soon as I received the game I was online, was going to do the campaign at a later point. The looks and style of the online menu options are similar to the first but in MW2 they have given you the choice of Titles and Emblems that the player can choose from once each has been unlocked. To unlock them you have to progress through the online levels and complete certain challenges, after choosing one that you like it will appear on your online account whilst in games. Another new feature they have added in is the ability to choose your reward for getting kill streaks. You have a great choice to choose from but you can only unlock a certain amount at a time.
My favourite one would have to be the Tactical Nuke, but to receive this reward you have to reach a kill streak of 25. This basically ends the game after you call in nuclear bombs, but it is well worth it!
Accolades are a new feature that has been put in place to show basically what you are best at within each game, for example ‘Immortal – Highest kill/death ratio’ I have received 17 times at the moment.
Now in create a class they have brought in mostly a new range of guns and perks, making the online play ever more interesting.
Now compared to the first MW it has the same outstanding graphics and controls. The new maps are good to play on and they have listed more game types to choose from.
I loved MW and at the moment loving MW2.
The online experience is near enough the same as the last, but this has just got new maps, guns and perks which really do seem to bring it to the next level. Whether or not Infinity Ward can do it again I am not sure.
What do you think? Are there any improvements that could be made?
